Just a Quickie Before Midnight
If you want to do something about environmental destruction do this tonight.
A deep dive on how to use financial leverage to solve the environmental destruction problem is still on deck for (hopefully) January. But this is “giving deadline” for any contributions to count on your 2022 taxes so I’m jumping the gun, and showing a sneak preview of what’s to come.
Here’s the short version:
350.org highlighted how insurance giant Marsh Mclennan is prepared to underwrite or facilitate underwriting EACOP, an egregious “energy” project that will destroy vast swaths of land in East Africa.
Follow-this.org, engine1.com, asyousow.org, and others are using shareholder influence as a tool to engage with environmental destroyers from within by purchasing shares of stock. When done at scale this buys a seat at the corporate decision-making table.
Based on 350.org’s information, I personally invested in stock in Marsh Mclennan, and wrote a letter as a shareholder, voicing opposition to EACOP. More on that in the next article.
But then: I made a profit on an increase in their stock price. I sold the shares, and just donated the profit to Follow-this. Imagine the possibilities if this were done in large numbers.
Follow-this is an organization making real change happen, not with symbolic gestures or antagonistic drama - but by using money. Money talks - see my earlier blog post for more background on this theme.
Meantime, go to Follow-this and donate.
See you next year!
